Scope
Affective computing, which aims to enable machines to understand human emotions, is a rising research topic in the fields of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence, etc. Compared with behavioral and peripheral physiological measures such as speech, facial expression, heart rate, etc., EEG is a measurement of human brain activities that could more directly reflect one's emotional experience. Therefore, EEG-based affective computing (also called affective brain computer interface) is gaining increasing attention in recent years.
The individual difference in people's emotional experiences and the correspondingly individualized emotion-related EEG activities is one of the greatest challenges for putting affective brain-computer interfaces into practical use. Compared with within-subjects affective brain computer interface, a pronounced decrease in the performance has been consistently reported in cross-subjects affective brain computer interface. The cross-subjects challenge has also been listed as the one of the challenges in World Robot Conference 2022, Brain-Controlled Robots competition. The cross-subjects challenge has attracted 156 teams from around the world, making it the challenge with the most teams in the entire competition.
This special issue aims to provide an opportunity for researchers to present their recent research and development in cross-subjects affective brain computer interface and the associated technologies. Topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Cross-subject emotion recognition algorithm
- The neural mechanism underlying the cross-subjects emotion
- The application of the cross-subject emotion recognition

Dr. Bao-Liang Lu, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Bao-Liang Lu is a tenured Professor in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and a Professor in RuiJin Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Prof. Lu is a Fellow of the IEEE. Prof. Lu received his Dr. Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, in 1994. He won the IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development Outstanding Paper Award in 2018, First Prize, Wu Wen Jun AI Science & Technology Award in 2020 and Best of IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing Paper Collection in 2021. His research interests include Brain-like Computing, Neural Networks, Deep Learning, Emotion AI, Affective Brain-Computer Interface, Objective Evaluation of Depression, and Digital Therapy.
Dr. Yong-Jin Liu, Tsinghua University
Yong-Jin Liu is a tenured Full Professor in the Computer Science Department at Tsinghua University, the director of Institute of HCI and Media Integration, Tsinghua University. His research interests include computational geometry, computer graphics, affective computing, and Intelligent Media Information Processing. He is now the Vice Chair of the Activity Group on Intelligent Graphics Committee, Chinese Society of Image and Graphics, and the Vice Chair of the Activity Group on Geometric Design and Computing, China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Dr. Wei-long Zheng, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
Wei-long Zheng is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was a postdoc associate in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a research fellow in the Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He won the IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development Outstanding Paper Award in 2018, First Prize, Wu Wen Jun AI Science & Technology Award in 2020, and Best of IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing Paper Collection in 2021. His research interests include Brain-like Computing, Neural Networks, Emotion AI, and Affective Brain-Computer Interfaces.
Dr. Dan Zhang, Tsinghua University
Dan Zhang is a tenured associate professor in the Department of Psychology, Tsinghua University, and an investigator at the Tsinghua Laboratory of Brain and Intelligence, Tsinghua University. His research interests include Brain-Computer Interface, Affective Computing, Learning Sciences, and Intelligent Psychometrics. He is now an editorial board member of IEEE Trans Affective Computing, Journal of Neuroscience Methods, and Frontiers in Neuroscience. He serves as a committee member of the Chinese Psychological Society Professional Community on Engineering Psychology, Professional Community on Learning Psychology, and a committee member of the Chinese Learning Sciences Society, China Association of Higher Education.
Dr. Jingjing Chen, Tsinghua University
Jingjing Chen is now a postdoc in the Department of Psychology, Tsinghua University. She received her B.S. degree and Ph.D. degree in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tsinghua University in 2011 and 2015, respectively. Her research interests include visual Brain-Computer Interface, EEG-based Affective Computing, and Learning Sciences. She serves as a young editor of Cyborg and Bionic Systems and a reviewer in IEEE Trans Biomedical Engineering, IEEE Trans Affective Computing, and IEEE Trans Games, etc.
